If you are a keen gardener, then there are two very simple ways of doing your bit for the environment. The first of these is to invest in a compost bin and the second is to attach a water butt to your gutter.

Sure, these will both cost you a few quid… but they will go on to save you far more money in the long run.

And (most importantly of all) they will both be excellent news for the planet!

Changes for a better world

A few weeks ago, I was invited for dinner at a colleague’s house. After dinner, as it is with men, talk soon veered towards work and in no time, we were lost into the intricacies of discussing online recruitment software, which is also our area of specialization. We gradually moved to the library with our drinks to continue the discussion. I have this queer habit of noticing the little things. Stuff others would seldom notice. In between dinner and discussion, I noticed that, all the lights in the house were ON, even the ones that we did not require. Like the one on the writing desk – we had no intention of doing anything there. Maybe my hosts liked having lots of lights.

It dawned on me that it was a colossal waste of electricity over a lifetime. Now, I am not advocating to live life like Uncle Scrooge, but we can certainly put off lights that we don’t require without taking stinginess to a new level. Not just lights, all electrical appliances use quite a bit of electricity even when not in use but are plugged in and the switch is in the ON position. This is because the appliance requires this electricity to switch on and stay live. This can be avoided by merely putting the electric switch to the OFF position when you finish with it.

While on the matter of savings, I noticed that people tend to leave the faucet running even when the water is not being used, like, while brushing teeth or during washing dishes after a meal. Call it laziness or not worth the trouble or what have you. This actually wastes more water than you would use for that act. By making the effort to turn the faucet off, we can prevent the unnecessary loss of precious resources. A small change in our habits can result in enormous savings.

Trying to be ‘Eco Friendly’ is becoming more and more common in UK households today, as people start to take some responsibility in ensuring out planet is still habitable for our family generations to come.

In many part of the United Kingdom local councils now only pick up black bag rubbish once a fortnight but recycle bags once a week, in a bid to encourage people to recycle as much as their rubbish as they possibly can, which includes plastic, cardboard and paper, food waste and garden waste. All other rubbish that is black bagged will only be collected once every two weeks which is somewhat of a nightmare to those who live in flats with no outside rubbish storage area. However if you recycle all that can be recycled who will be pleasantly surprise by how little black bag rubbish you actually accumulate.

Restructuring you kitchen to make recycling work for your home and figuring out what needs to go where can be more complicate than attempting to figure out that new master data management system you have at work. Some local councils are happy for a lot of recyclable materials to be bunged in together for sorting at a later point, but if you live in an area where you have five different coloured bags for different rubbish matter, it can be a little stressful when you are busy making tea for all the family and juggling a hundred other household tasks.

You can now buy multi compartment bins from homeware stores and these are probably your best bet, especially if you live in a flat with no place to sort out your rubbish easily. Once you have got used to popping your rubbish away in the right bin it will become second nature to you, and you’ll wonder why we all didn’t start doing this years ago!

Benefiting the Environment

One of the best ways to make things right in our life is to cut off all the unwanted things. This stands true for anything and everything that happens in your life. It is also true when it comes to our deteriorating the environment. In our day to day life we see so many useless things around us. All of these useless things were manufactured at the cost of the environment we live in. For example the junk mail that we receive everyday through snail mail. We would not even spend more than couple of seconds on this junk mail and if we can discourage the people who create such material, then we can save thousands of trees per day. One ton of paper can save 17 trees, therefore it certainly makes sense to use recycled paper.

Using recycled paper will also reduce the emission of green house gasses. All the non bio degradable waste created during the manufacture of paper becomes a part of landfills. Most of the landfill materials are capable of releasing methane gas once they start to decompose. Using recycled paper is the best way of reducing the manufacture of fresh paper. Also, instead of requesting for printed bills try getting e-bills, it is a better way of keeping a record of things as well as an opportunity to reduce the use of paper.

Plastic is another substance that is difficult to dispose. In order to decompose plastic you will have to bury it at least for 700 years. Many of the mediums used for marketing use plastic, as it’s cheap and can be easily transformed to look attractive, for example in case of display stands. But as a business you can opt for eco friendly marketing campaigns. This will not only benefit the environment, but will also increase the goodwill of your business. Customers today are keen to buy from manufactures that are causing the least amount of damage to the environment.

Organic Clothing A Paradigm Shift

In today’s world one of the buzz terms has been saving the environment and organic clothing. Organic clothing is made up of materials that are free from harmful chemicals such as pesticides or insecticides. Most of these materials are manufactured from plants and animals. With new technology and processing methods this kind of clothing has now been made very comfortable to wear. This has helped to drive the organic clothing business to new heights.

When organic clothing was introduced to the market, they came with higher prices than the traditional ones. But as the public realized the importance of this clothing to maintain good health and wellness, price had not become an issue. Because of the strong demand for such clothing, eventually the price went down. This was a significant change that made a difference in sales and acceptance.

Choosing the clothes we wear could contribute to environmental, economic and social change. Our clothing is usually made from synthetic fibers which are non-organic. The harmful chemicals that we were exposed to from buying these products could be absorbed by the skin and possibly enter into the bloodstream and cause toxication.

If we choose to purchase only organic clothing we are helping to make a better change to our world. We are supporting the farmers who supply organic materials to make the organic products and encourage garment manufacturers to maximize the production of natural organic materials.

When I made the change I placed a perpex sign on my wardrobe door to remind myself. Maybe you can do the same just to get yourself started and remembering to buy organic. Moreover, we are also supporting the environment, economy and businesses to their strong standards of eliminating non-organic products in the market. We are hoping to see future designers who will help to remove the carbon marks we put in the surface of the earth.

With the pollution levels all around the world on an all time high and the global climate taking a major hit, it is about time that we control our usage of products that are harmful for the environment. Our environment is the only environment in the whole universe that is capable of breeding life. If this delicate equilibrium that we live in is further shaken, it would be impossible for life to exist on Earth.

In such a case it only makes sense for us to use only those products that are environmentally friendly. The government all around the world is trying to make products eco friendly and this will surely help us to fix the global climate issues. There are so many things that we use every day like bags, books, paper, clothes, pencils etc. While all of us would not use all of these things, but there is one thing that is commonly used by human beings all around the world and that are clothes. All of us use clothes. Production of clothes is endless. All around the world the production of clothes has only increased, never decreased. Therefore it only makes sense to wear clothes that are organic or eco friendly.

When one of my friends wanted to buy some casual fabrics, I asked her if she wanted to buy eco friendly fabrics, she said she was not going to buy leaves. While I laughed at it, I was surprised later to find out that she did not know what they were, I had to explain her that eco friendly clothing were those clothes that were manufactured in a way that would not be harmful for the environment, for example not using the chemicals that would be harmful for the environment to colour a fabric. If you are willing to wear eco friendly clothes then it’s very simple, you just have to check the label of the cloth and it would mention if it’s eco friendly. If you buy eco friendly clothes you are telling the manufacturer good job and make more, while also doing your bit for the sake of the planet.

Strolling to work this morning through the back streets of London’s West End it suddenly struck me how disgusting my surroundings were. Littered with coffee cups, lids, carriers, bottles, fag end the road was a disgrace. This was only one street, there are many more just like this and it is disappointing and infuriating. Why is it so hard to do such a simple task, like throw your rubbish in to a bin or recycle it? When we live in a society where you get judged for everything from how green your hairdresser is to how many hybrid cars you have owned, why is it still acceptable to litter in the streets?

It’s not just the drunken weekend louts either, some of the world’s richest and apparently most intelligent people work in the West end area yet they still litter constantly. What will make this throwaway society of ours clean itself up? If instead of littering at every and any opportunity every person in London picked up one bit of rubbish and put in the bin then it would clean up our streets. But no they can’t do that they are too above cleaning someone else’s or even their own rubbish.

Although it is incredibly sad to see it in the concrete jungle of our cities and towns, it is even more disheartening to see litter and rubbish strewn across parks and beaches. I was horrified at the level of litter on Brighton Beach one Sunday morning, it was an absolute disgrace.

This country needs to wake up and embrace the fact that we know what is and what isn’t good for the environment and learn from it. Not just accept and ignore it!

Reduce your carbon footprint

I know, I know, you’ve heard it all before…you need to reduce your carbon footprint, blah, blah, blah…but here’s the thing: you actually really do. And don’t come up with a list of excuses before we’ve even started here! Just read the list. I’m sure you might be able to manage a few of these:

1) Leave the car at home for a change and take the train on a weekend excursion. This is good for all sorts of reasons, one of them being that you get to see a much better view on the train – one of unspoiled beauty. So not only do you not pump smog into the atmosphere, but you do it in style!

2) Walk instead of get the bus. Many people get the bus so much that they forget that it really doesn’t take much longer to use their legs. In fact, in some cases like in rush hour, it can even be quicker to use those legs!

3) Consider sharing a ride with someone on the way to work. Okay, this doesn’t always work, but often it does and it works a treat. Share the petrol cost and that’s one less car on the road. It may not sound like a big deal, but if just on tenth of the people in the world did this, imagine the impact it’d have!

4) Use organic things to die Silk Fabrics , and when doing DIY around the home, use reclaimed timber and stuff from the skip. Many things get chucked out for no good reason at all: don’t be a silly, take advantage of recycled things and create something new at a fraction of the price!
